Chiropractic is an alternative healthcare profession that specializes in spinal health and the function of the human body, Chiropractors are trained to evaluate and diagnose patients based on their clinical presentation and physical exam findings. Doctors of Chiropractic aim to improve the function of the body by improving the motion of the spine and extremities through specific adjustments that aim to correct biomechanical and nervous system imbalances to improve function and quality of life.
Doctors of Chiropractic are trained in the evaluation, management, and treatment of patients for musculoskeletal conditions and those who strive for optimal performance and life improvement. Doctors of Chiropractic must complete a 4 year, rigorous, post-graduate education including training in: physiology, anatomy, orthopedic diagnosis, visceral diagnosis, neurological diagnosis, diagnostic imaging, physical therapy, nutrition, pediatric care, geriatric care, chiropractic patient management, and much more. Doctors of Chiropractic must also pass 4 National Chiropractic Board Exams to practice. These highly educated professionals work to improve the quality of life of their patients by performing chiropractic adjustments and educating patients on nutrition and healthy life choices.
An adjustment can have several different descriptions based on which Chiropractic Technique that the practitioner utilizes. Typically an adjustment is a high-velocity low-amplitude corrective movement provided by the doctor of chiropractic to the patient to correct a spinal subluxation. These gentle mobilizations allow for improved function of joints and tissues surrounding those joints.
A subluxation is a term used by chiropractors to describe a subtle misalignment of a joint or tissue that may inhibit proper function. Looking deeper into the term, there are 5 components to a subluxation including: spinal kinesiopathology, myopathology, neuropathophysiology, histopathology, and pathophysiology.
